The Liberal-NDP Pact announced this week contains a lot of promises that working people have been waiting for, for a long time. The Romanow Commission proposed more than 20 years ago and to wide acclaim, to expand universal Medicare to include pharmacare, dental care, vision, and long-term care.

The Liberal’s own Dr. Eric Hoskins proposed a universal, single-payer pharmacare system in 2019.

These were good ideas then, and they’re good ideas now. But regrettably for working people and for public health, that’s not what’s on the table.

International Women’s Day, 2022

The continuing struggle for women’s and gender equality, peace and socialism

March 8, 2022 marks two years of a pandemic and economic crisis that has seen women losing ground in the struggle for social equality. Women in Canada have lost jobs at a higher rate than men, have lost hours of work, have lost wages and wage increases and have lost future pension income because of those reduced incomes. They have lost their childcare providers and the schools for their children and have often been required to bear these responsibilities in addition to their work – if they still have work.

Repatriate Canadian and NATO Troops, Arms, and Military Equipment

Negotiate a Peaceful Political Solution

The military incursion of Russian forces into Ukraine has seriously ratcheted up tensions in the region, across Europe and internationally, and increased the danger of ‘great power’ confrontation and even nuclear war. This military action must end as quickly as possible, and with minimum loss of lives, especially among the civilian population, and a negotiated political settlement to the crisis must be sought and secured.

Defend Civil Liberties – Enforce Hate Laws

News that the federal government has invoked the Emergencies Act to deal with the continuing occupation of Ottawa by the so-called truckers’ convoy led by far-right and fascist forces, may sound like a good idea to some, but it is a sledgehammer that will suspend the civil and democratic rights of everyone in Canada, effectively imposing martial law across the country. Though the Prime Minister promises to be selective in using the arbitrary powers he has acquired, the Emergency Act effectively suspends the Charter of Rights, eliminating civil and democratic rights in Canada.

The Communist Party of Canada views the “Freedom Convoy” as a public expression of the increasingly organized and assertive far right. The clear links between the organizers of the convoy and far-right networks indicate that this is not a spontaneous working-class demonstration. On the contrary, it is part of a global phenomenon: the rise and mainstreaming of the far right, which is demonstrated by the strong support (ideologically and financially) from the US far right and circles close to Donald Trump and the Jan. 6th insurrection. The convoy is filled with Nazi and Confederated flags, election signs for Bernier and all sorts of far-right symbols. The $10 million raised through Go Fund Me for this convoy also showcases that this was planned by ultra-right networks. It is certainly not the meagre earnings of the working class that is funding this effort.

Mélanie Joly to Kiev: “a friend” with fascists to reassure warmongers

The Communist Party of Canada condemns Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s recent visit to Kiev, as a provocation against Russia and a statement of support for Western imperialism’s warmongering. Through her visit, she has contributed to legitimizing a fascistic regime, with the aim of escalating tensions between NATO and Russia.
