The Communist Party of Canada joins progressive and democratic voices around the world in condemning the new wave of anti-Communist repression in Sudan. We demand the immediate end of this repression and the release of all political detainees.

The CPC is particularly concerned about the capture of Suliman Ali, the Political Secretary of the Sudanese Communist Party in the Blue Nile Province, who has been charged with crimes that carry the death penalty. In fact, his “crime” was distributing a Communist Party statement on the anniversary of the Sudanese 21st October Revolution. We understand that Comrade Suliman’s poor health has been deteriorating since his detention began on November 2, and we call for his immediate and unconditional release.

The attacks and arrests by the Sudanese Security and Intelligence Forces are timed to coincide with military action against the people of Southern Kordufan and other war zones in Sudan. It is part of an escalating campaign by the state to silence opposition and destroy organizations who defend the Sudanese people’s rights.
