Today, on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, we send warm fraternal greetings and congratulations to the Chinese people, the government of the PRC, and the Communist Party of China.
The victorious struggle against colonialism, Japanese fascism, and imperialism, led to the 1949 revolution and the establishment of socialism in China, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
From a feudal country, China has grown into a technologically advanced industrial state, lifting over 700 million Chinese out of deep poverty, delivering healthcare, education, housing and jobs to a population of over 1 billion. Rising wages and living standards, and a trade union movement that is larger than any other in the world, have helped to build an economy whose growth and strength have surpassed all others.
China has made enormous advances in reducing carbon emissions and developing renewable energy sources, including building cities such as Shenzhen on a renewable power grid. Cities such as Beijing, which in the recent past suffered from serious air and other pollution, now have clean air and green retrofits to make them safe and habitable for all who live and work there.
Today China is an international force for peace, global disarmament and mutual security, with extensive trade relations based on multi-lateralism and mutual benefit.
The Canadian government could best mark this occasion by ending the illegal and unwarranted detention of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who is being held at the request of the Trump administration for extradition to the US on trumped up charges. Canada’s facilitating role will only sharpen tensions between Canada and China, while aiding the US in its politically charged campaign against the People’s Republic of China.
