The Communist Party of Canada vehemently condemns the Carney government’s decision to abstain on the July 7th United Nations General Assembly vote on whether to proceed with a debate on the U.S. embargo against Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While 136 countries voted in favour of holding the debate in an overwhelming rejection of Washington’s bullying, the Carney government shamefully abstained, joining the United States and just 38 others in either opposing or sitting on the fence. This resounding global support for Cuba demonstrates that the vast majority of the world recognizes that the U.S. blockade is an act of collective punishment and economic warfare that flagrantly violates the UN Charter and international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Canada’s abstention is a disgrace and a betrayal. This capitulation comes as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio circulated a three-page intimidation letter through U.S. embassies worldwide, warning that countries speaking honestly about the blockade would “create friction in our bilateral relations.” Rather than resist this bullying, Carney bent the knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This July vote, however, was not the annual vote on the U.S. blockade that has occurred for more than thirty years at the UN General Assembly. This vote will take place this October. For 31 consecutive years, Canada has stood with the world’s overwhelming majority in voting against this criminal act of the United States government. The Carney government’s recent abstention raises the alarming prospect that it is breaking with an important stance and may abstain\u2014or worse, vote with Washington\u2014when the real test comes this autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Carney postures about Canadian sovereignty, yet his government has repeatedly refused to express an independent Canadian foreign policy position against recent illegal US aggressions against Venezuela, Iran and now Cuba. Rather than standing with a close neighbour facing down U.S. military threats and a devastating act of war, Ottawa has deepened Cuba’s isolation: issuing travel warnings, suspending flights, channelling token aid to NGOs instead of the elected government, and maintaining silence as the blockade strangles the population. This refusal to speak out is a surrender of Canada’s own sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba’s socialist revolution proved that working people can expel U.S. monopolies, reclaim their land and resources, and build a society where life expectancy rivals that of advanced capitalist countries\u2014all while under a brutal siege. Cuba’s free healthcare and education systems expose the lie that ruthless capitalist exploitation is necessary for human development. It is for this “crime” of dignity that Cuba is being starved and threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Communist Party of Canada demands that the Canadian government immediately and unequivocally speak out against threats of military invasion, break its complicity with the blockade, lift the travel advisory and send oil to Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Carney government cannot be allowed to appease Trump and Rubio. Labour, peace and democratic forces must mobilize now to ensure that these shameless actions do not stand. Canada must uphold its just position against the blockade\u2014a position it has held since this policy was first imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
