Solidarity with the CUPW action in defence of Canada Post and public services

In the face of the labour dispute at Canada Post, the Communist Party of Canada reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the working class by standing in full solidarity with postal workers. We unite our voices and actions with these workers, who are fighting not only to defend their wages and working conditions but to preserve a public, accessible, and high-quality postal service for all.

We condemn the Kaplan Report and its conclusions, which seek nothing less than the dismantling of Canada Post, in line with the demands of state-monopoly capitalism. This report demands the subordination of public services to private corporate interests, effectively transforming Canada Post into a subsidy machine for profit-driven monopolies. Its recommendations include eliminating home delivery for individuals (while maintaining it for businesses), imposing algorithmically dictated routes timed to the second, and forcing workers into precarious “flexible” roles, such as additional tasks if routes are completed early.

Behind the euphemism of “flexibility” lies a ruthless agenda: the Amazonification of labour. The goal is to impose Amazon-style exploitation: overworked, underpaid, and disposable workers. This is exemplified by the closure of Amazon’s Quebec warehouses, which destroyed nearly 6,000 union jobs. Such tactics aim to pit Canada Post against private giants like Amazon, Purolator, and DHL, driving a race to the bottom in wages and working conditions across the sector. Privatization is the endgame, with multinationals poised to carve up and profit from public infrastructure.

While capital seeks to reduce postal services to a minimum, the time is ripe for Canada Post’s expansion. Postal workers and the CUPW have proposed visionary solutions: including access to the internet and telephone services at reasonable prices, and a public postal bank. Instead, management is determined to leave these sectors fallow so that the private sector can take over, depriving us of necessary services.

We also denounce the business coalition’s smear campaign, which accuses postal workers as “holding the public hostage.” The fact is that this dispute is entirely created by management that obeys the interests of Big Business, with shameful interference from the government. The government relied on anti-worker laws like Section 107 to suppress strikes and collective bargaining, resulting in Canada Post feeling confident enough that the government would force striking postal workers back to work. The last freely negotiated collective agreement dates back to 2008, proving that this contempt for workers is commonplace at Canada Post.

The Communist Party of Canada pledges full solidarity for all those struggling for a high-quality public postal service and the defence and expansion of all public services. We call all people to stand in solidarity with postal workers, recognizing the defence of public services is a key part of the defence of the interests of working people.

We urge the entire labour movement to organize and prepare solidarity actions with the CUPW’s struggle, as it is a key political battle in the escalating class struggle. The outcome will shape not only postal workers’ working conditions and wages, but the maintenance of public services nationwide.

A victory for postal workers would expose the bosses’ weakness and prove the strength of workers’ unity and their ability to take action against the power of the monopolies. It would send a clear message to Carney: We will not surrender our jobs, wages, working conditions or public services.
