Continue to build solidarity with Palestine to move from ceasefire to liberation

The Communist Party of Canada welcomes the immediate ceasefire in Gaza. However, the current proposal for Gaza is not a peace plan. While any temporary respite that halts the bombing and allows food to reach a starving population is a desperately needed reprieve, the later parts of Trump and Netanyahu’s plan are a strategic maneuver designed to perpetuate the genocide and deny Palestinian liberation. We salute the resistance and steadfastness of the people of Gaza, all Palestinians, and the millions of people worldwide who have mobilized against genocide and created the conditions for a ceasefire. Their struggle is the real force for peace and justice.

The proposed plan is a further step toward extinguishing the possibility of a sovereign Palestinian state. The latter phases of the deal, with their imposed “Board of Peace” and an “International Stabilisation Force,” are a facade for continued US and Israeli control. This undemocratic body, controlled by war criminals like Donald Trump and Tony Blair, treats Gaza as a piece of real estate to be developed, not as an integral part of a nation with the right to self-determination. The plan’s deliberate vagueness on statehood, conditional on years of “reforms”, and the allowance for Israeli “security perimeters” reveal its goal: to consolidate an apartheid system under a new guise. This plan also completely ignores the ongoing ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, where settler violence supported by the Israeli state continues unabated and is escalating. We hope that international negotiations, which must include the full participation of Palestinian political forces, will result in a real path to a lasting peace.

The world must place the onus for complying with the ceasefire entirely on Israel and its imperialist handler, the United States, given their historic role in breaking ceasefires and violating promises. The U.S. plan is designed to impose its imperialist hegemony over the whole West Asian region, and it has used Israel’s criminal aggression over the past two years to advance its own strategic goals against neighbouring peoples in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. We demand the full and immediate withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza and the complete lifting of the siege. Beyond that, a real lasting peace requires a complete and permanent end to the genocide that began with the Nakba and the full realization of Palestinian national rights. Israel has never been more isolated internationally due to its crimes against humanity which have been on full display for the last two years. There is hope in the growing global solidarity movement and the resistance of Palestinians that the racist, supremacist ideology of Zionism will be defeated and Palestinian liberation will be won.

The Communist Party of Canada demands that the Canadian government not only support an immediate ceasefire but take immediate, concrete action to pressure the US and Israel to end the genocide. Canada must work for a just and lasting peace based on the consensus of Palestinian resistance movements as outlined in the 2024 Beijing Declaration: the creation of a viable Palestinian state within the pre June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the dismantling of all settlements, and the right of return for refugees. Real pressure from Canada means an immediate two way arms embargo, enacting Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions at a state level and breaking diplomatic and trade relations with Israel. Only through such decisive action can Canada side with justice and a genuine peace.
